Dear Jan:

This is the first time that composition on one of my books has been started before I checked the references, and I had never realized just how many small errors get into the quotes during the various transcriptions that intervene between source and manuscript. I am afraid that these have given you considerable extra work. At any rate I have been trying to minimize the need for further correction of your completed pages by putting all available time into the reference checking job, and I have covered most of the remaining items. Enclosed is a list of the corrections to be made, also a copy of a list that I sent you some time ago. There are still some references that I have not yet located, but the number of further corrections should be small. I am holding the first five chapters until I locate two or three references that are still missing from these pages.
