Dec. 19, 1983
Dear Dewey:
Enclosed please find the first five chapters of The Universe of Motion in two copies. I am actually as far as chapter 14, but only the first five have been proofread. I’m taking the whole thing up to Canada, where I hope to have the leisure to finish the proofreading on what has been typed. When I come back in early January I will try to finish the typing quickly. As I mentioned before, at this point it is important to get the text right. The actual typesetting is then handled by a computer, so that no new textual mistakes will be introduced in that process. A couple of minor points: p. 12, line 6 from bottom. Should “a decrease” be changed to “inversely”? P. 19, lines 2-3—when I typed this I thought it necessary to rephrase the sentence somewhat, but now I am not sure: there is some grammatical ambiguity. P. 28, line 14, I changed the word “bowl” to “container.” Is this OK?
As to the references, I am enclosing a xerox copy of what I’ve done so far. I’ll work on it some more in Canada, and again when I get back here.
A friend of mine, who is a graduate student in architecture at Columbia, has agreed to draw the illustrations. He does very fine work, and I hope it works out.
All the best for the holidays and a healthy and productive 1983 to both of you.
My best,
