Dear Jan:
Here are the “raw” sketches for the illustrations in the book, and a few instructions for the artist.
I believe the simplest way to handle the job is to copy the diagrams direct from my drawings, and then reduce them to the sizes that you will want for the book. I think that most of then would look ok in the size used in Q&P. Figs. 25, 26, and 27 were taken from that book, The following 8 figures need to be larger—perhaps full page—9, 10, 11, 13, 16, 18, 20, 22.
Some corrections and additions have been made since I sent you copies of these drawings earlier, so the older ones should be discarded.
Where we have scales alongside the diagrams, I believe it is desirable to complete the rectangles as boundary lines for the diagrams, and I have so specified. Diagrams without scales, such as Fig. 19, look better without the boundary lines, in my opinion.
Four figures are taken from earlier books, I and 2 from The Structure of the Physical Universe, and 7 and 8 from The Neglected Facts of Science. Probably the easiest way to handle these will be to reproduce them directly from the books (or 1 and 2 can be taken from the copy that I have made from the book), blocking out the captions, and then have the artist put in the new captions.
I am enclosing a list of the captions for the illustrations. You may find this helpful in checking. I have also found it advantageous to have lists of the pages on which the various illustrations and tables are first mentioned, and I am enclosing lists of this kind. I will bring the new page numbers up to date as I do the proofreading. The positions of these items in the book should follow closely after they are first mentioned.
Please let me know if there is anything that I have overlooked in this connection.
