Dear Jan:
Here is my reply to a letter from your friend Henry Hoff. I suppose he sent you a copy, but if not, and you would like to see what he had to say, I will send it to you.
The kind of issues that he has raised are hard to deal with, simply because of the large amount of work that is involved. I can answer questions about my theoretical development, or about the relation of my results to the observed facts. Even then it is usually quite a job to get the answer into the terms in which it clears up the points at issue. To explain why my results and those derived from some other theory differ is much more of an undertaking, as this means that I have to make an intensive study of that other theory. As I tried to explain to Hoff, I just don't have the time to do this. However, I did run down the source of the trouble in one case, to give him something to chew on.
Thanks for the galaxy book. In response to your comments about a book on astronomy, I can say that I have the contents (that is, the substance, not the text as yet) of Volume III of The Structure of the Physical Universe, the astronomical volume, just about complete. If the new book coming out this spring goes over well, it may be possible to arrange for publication of the astronomy volume. In that case, I think we would put it out ahead of Volume II, which is not as far along toward completion.
Sincerely yours,
